As the song says: “It might as well be Spring”. And so it is in the Pacific Northwest.

New buds, new blossoms, new grass…and a new name for the PBY-Naval Air Museum.

For 21 years we have been the PBY Memorial Foundation and half that time we’ve had a

location called: The PBY-Naval Air Museum. Times change and so do we. Our artifacts,

exhibits and everything you can see at the Museum have expanded to include many

How quickly the world can go topsy turvy! After a very successful 2019, the museum started the new year firing on all cylinders. Collaborations with regional organizations throughout the Pacific Northwest were being expanded. As the range of history covered by our activities grew, a new name was chosen to accurately reflect this expanding scope of naval aviation history. Then Coronavirus brought operations to a dead stop. While the museum is closed until the restrictions on social contact are eased, museum leadership is continuing to work toward the future.

American Association of University Women (AAUW) Representative Visit

Museum volunteer John Hughes escorts Terry Welch, a member of  the American Association of University Women (AAUW), around the museum as part of her research on historical aviatrix Jackie Cochran. Among her other achievements, Cochran founded Woman’s Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) in WWII.  These civilian volunteers ferried and tested planes so male pilots could head to combat duty. Cochran set many records and was the first woman to break the sound barrier on 18 May 1953.

PBY 5A Catalina’s Gust Lock Replaced

Museum volunteers Wayne Hastriter, John Hughes and Omar Young, supervised by Aircraft Restoration Manager George Love, replaced the STBD Elevator Gust-Locks on the PBY Catalina 5A across from the Museum recently. Preservation and restoration work on the aircraft is continually ongoing and more volunteers are welcome to participate. Ilundain Reenlists

25 individuals joined Navy Information Technology Technician First Class (IT1) Enrique Ilundain for his 4-year reenenlistment at the museum today. Ilundain is attached to Mobile Tactical Operations Center Two (MTOC2) aboard Naval Air Station Whidbey Island and is a native of New York City, NY. The reenlisting officer was Lt. Robert Johnson.

Navy Lt. David Cloward, USN,  of NAS Whidbey’s Mobile Tactical Operations Center 6, is sworn in as Lt. David Cloward, USNR at a ceremony beneath the Museum’s PBY 5A Catalina on Thursday, Feb 20. The swearing in officer was Officer-in-Charge, MTOC-6, Lt. Ryan Kelly. Cloward hails from Salt Lake City Utah.

Children’s Visit

30 children from the Oak Harbor Classical Conversations Home School Community visited the Museum recently. Classical Conversations Home School is a curriculum that spans all of the US and 22 countries. This is a different style of learning including foundations grammar (ages 4-12) and rhetoric, including debate (High School).
